Loosing a bit of your practice!
Hello!
A blog on a Wednesday afternoon? What am I like.
Recently when teaching the bairns of Levenmouth in our Friday night drama class, I started with the usual drama games and warm up techniques.
You know, the classics- Splat! Honey I love you! Bitty Boppity Boo.
The group have just started a new term & when asked what they would like to look at this term “to be a good actor” was the resounding response.
We started how many good actors start, learning the art of improvisation.
Working with them, I set up improvisations techniques and scenes the young people could respond. Pitching a new holiday package, a life changing product etc.
When working with the young people I was loving the class & felt really in my zone facilitating - it was great!
The young people had a brilliant time, so did I! But something was missing…I couldn’t work out what, couldn’t quite articulate it.
I got home, had my dinner & was chatting away…it hit me.
I miss directing. I miss text.
Getting my teeth into a play, a play with many scenes. Drama & action & subtext.
At what point as artists do we shift & change our practices, into something that feels great in action but leaves us yearning for something else?
We often wear many hats in our role as artist, educator & director, sometimes we forget to dust some of them off.
I’m lucky enough to work with many great groups of young people, community cast & women. Often though its for short bursts & timed projects.
Going to make it a goal this year to get my teeth into a play and even put on a scratch of it!
Will let you know how I get on!
Take care, everyone!
